The Toils of Oils

December 6, 2012

I hate to say it, but my recent obsession with oils has backfired on me just a lil bit. After a bunch of positive feedback on my previous post on oils I got a little oil-happy.

Without any research or even recommendation from anyone, I began using my coconut oil for face cleansing. Ahhhh did it feel nice…and smelled even better! I put about a teaspoon of coconut oil on a hot rag and gently scrubbed my face. Afterwards my face was completely make-up free and so very well hydrated. Just positively glowing! I began getting a TON of compliments on my skin, my make up was wearing beautifully…

That is until about three days ago when I began seeing….CLOGGED PORES!!!! and ZITS where ZITS HAVE NEVER BEEN BEFORE!!! I typically only break out around my chin for hormonal reasons, but nope not this time. Zits on my nose, zits on my forehead, chin, cheeks. Blackheads every which way. Apparently for me, coconut oil is comedogenic….not everyone has such misfortune with it, but I will definitely be sticking to body use only for my coconut oil.

Am I turned off from oil cleansing altogether? Hell no!!! I loved how it made my skin look and feel, I just need to get an oil that will not clog my pores. For that I’m definitely turning to Living Libations and I can’t wait to keep y’all posted on my results.

Has anyone else had an experience like this with coconut oil? Success with it?

Have you tried grape seed oil? It’s for sensitive skin. I’ve been using it for a few weeks and I haven’t had any breakouts, and my skin is usually pretty acne prone.

I haven’t but I’ve heard it’s incredible. Keep me posted on how things go for you with it! Thanks for reading Laura.

I had the exact same experience! Only I had read that the zits were probably my skin ‘purging’ itself since coconut oil is antibacterial, so I kept with it way longer than any person with sense should…haha. I’m loving Badger’s Damascus Rose Beauty Balm right now, no problems after a month of use 🙂

For me double cleansing works better then just cleansing with oil. I start with using massage my face a bit with an oil, continues with a cleansing gel and finally massage a bit with luke warm water. Gives you the benefit of both oil-cleansing and traditional face-wash, but without drying your skin.

Coconut oil is actually known to be comedogenic. As well is sweet almond oil, sesame oil, olive oil and a hole bunch of other stuff according to:

Haha see?? Apparently it’s pretty common knowledge that coconut oil is comedogenic. I really need to do my research next time. That double cleansing method sounds heavenly 🙂

He he, no, not common knowledge exactly. Didn´t know that either until I stumbled over some literature on the subject. Its a jungle out there…:)

I’ve been testing rose oil on my face, we’ll see how that goes!

    Hi!

I have had a similar experience if i do not rinse the coconut oil properly with water…or else, you an try following the first wash with coconut oil with a second wash with a cleanser!

Girl, I have tried all the oils. For me, jojoba is the least comedogenic. I use it every morning and night. I also bought like five pounds of unrefined raw shea butter from Africa online for $8 to use as my winter face cream and it’s pretty nice. Although I think my pores are looking big from literally smearing butter all over my face with my hands.
